181. play it again, John

Time to turn up the volume and take a roadtrip. Summer has begun, and there’s no better way to get started than a festival. This year I’m going with some friends to the Main Square Festival in Arras, France. I’ve elected these beauties by Suzanne Van Oirschot as my festival earrings. She uses old Dutch brands as an inspiration  - in this case a pudding brand. Music maestro!

180. barbed wire

As my days on the job consist of working (amongst others) at a travel documentary about the first World War, quite some gruesome war stories cross my path. Seeing these earrings by Wouters & Hendrix and their barbed wire makes me associate them with nothing less than pure horror. Maybe I should lock them up for a while until my associations are less atrocious…

179. on a roll

I absolutely adore the art of Slinkachu and his little people. A while ago he took his art to the streets of Antwerp, where people could go and search for his figurines. As these earrings from Malaga also take a twist with some little people on them, I decided to put them on a special place as well. Be welcome to come and search for them any time…

178. sweet or savory

In general, I’ll rather buy savory snacks than sweet ones. Candy or chocolates I can resist, but some marinated artichokes or olives tempt me over and over again. The only thing I can’t go without, is icecream. When summer’s there, I just need to get me some icecream. These little buds of cake and icecream can hang on my ears anytime. Mmmm…

177. raining cats and dogs

I must confess, I’m neither a cats nor a dogs person. I’ve been scared of dogs all my life - especially after being chased by one in France when I was a kid. But cats don’t really do it for me either. I like that they’re independent  and soft, but I haven’t ever felt the need to have a cat. I don’t have any problem with these cute earrings I found in Maastricht though…

176. pictures and illustrations

These cute girls were a birthday gift from my friend Noortje. I’m not quite sure where she got them from, but they remind me of the jewelry of the lovely Hilde Groven, a Belgian illustrator and designer. I got to know her work by a ex-collegue, Nathalie Dolmans, who took the beautiful pictures of Hilde’s pieces. Keep an eye on those two ladies!

175. photoshop

Every now and then I feel a little nostalgia for analogue photography. The times of clicking and anxiously waiting a few days for the results. Times of turning the little wheel until a click announced the next photo. Polaroids had the magic of seeing your picture appear out of nothing. I still haven’t decided which tiny pictures to put in these polaroid earrings, perhaps of two ears?

174. fjord wandering

As the holiday period comes nearer, my mind starts wandering in the direction of Norway, where I’ll be spending the first two weeks of August. The summer holidays will however always be connected to the South of France, where my mom bought these earrings. I can’t wait to make some new memories in the fjords though…

173. Ahoy mateys

It never hurts to go in theme. My mom got these sailor earrings with a key to the treasure from my aunt, who got them at a cute little shop called Karma in Heverlee. They call themselves a ‘feel good store’, which works fine for me, as their store is filled up to the nook with original goodies. One to visit!

172. easy breezy

Less is more, and it don’t always have to be the most eccentric pieces that make it to our closet. As I feel naked without any earrings on, this is a perfect pair to wear at home or while sporting. They’re light enough not to bother you, but stylish enough not to feel ear-naked. Luxury-problems, right?

171. you've got male

So, I need a bit of a shave, eh? It was only a matter of time until I would feature one of my male friends and their earrings here. This cool little specimen belongs to Willem, an allround creativo and good friend, ever since we did Blaffetuur together. I must admit I wasn’t always the biggest fan of men with earrings, but I do dig the way he wears them. Class!

170. drugs and rock 'n' roll

Marihuana and rolling the dice, I guess the message Wouters & Hendrix tried to get across is clear. I can’t really imagine the two lovely ladies Katrin and Karin to have been the most outrageous party-animals - but who knows, they might’ve put all their exuberant party secrets into these earrings - jewels never kiss and tell.

169. in the gloria

I promise I won’t go celebrating just about anyone’s birthday here, but ofcourse he’s not just about anyone. As I haven’t ever given him a pair of earrings, you’ll just have to do with this cute pair he got me at Tante Jojo’s. Don’t worry, he got one hell of a bike in return, so I think he’s good for now. Anyhow: happy birthday, honey!

168. calm chaos

Time to introduce you to another Italian designer: Maria Calderara. She was trained as an architect, but came into designing clothing and jewelry almost by accident. She got intrigued by the glassblowing industry in hometown Venice and the rest is history. The fact that she describes her own work as ‘calm chaos’ fascinates me to pieces…

167. elephants and waterski

Today, I went waterskiing with friends of my parents, Rudi and Chris. Quite the experience, but after some inhalations of water I did manage to take a lap around the lake. Chris brought me these lovely elephants from their recent holiday to Malaga. Since our trip to Africa I’m quite fond of these amazing animals, so they definitely hit the mark!

166. a hundred horizons

My parents never elaborate for hours about the trips they take, they just tell some quick headlines, until you have a rough idea of their vacation. Ideal to me! One of the stories this time was about these earrings, which they found in a little mountainvillage called Asolo in the Veneto region. The fact that it’s called the village of a 100 horizons says it all. I cant’ wait to see the pictures…

165. Ay caramba!

Aaah Mexico, land of mayas and tortillas. It’s been a staggering 13 years since I’ve been there, but I must say it left quite the impression. Wether it were the breathtaking ruins in Chichen Itza, the swimming with dolphins in Xcaret or the white beaches of Playa Del Carmen, I’ll never know. But when I found these earrings in my mom’s closet I felt the warm air breezing through my hair again. Méjico!

164. to the dot

I’m a polka dot girl. You won’t find me wearing them every day, but deep inside, I am. They’re frisky, they’re fun, there’s no room for cynisism in polka dots. It’s not easy going polka on your ears, but these earrings made by Diesel make a fair effort. Combined with some black and white, I’m ready to dance the dots away!

163. let's talk palladio

Talking about travelling - my parents just returned from a bicycling trip through northern Italy. They brought me these earrings made by Annamaria Iodice. She was inspired by the local Palladian architecture, and its typical Rotonda. She describes them to define reality and spatiality. I just think they’re pretty - those Italians with their words!

162. travelling genes

I’m quite sure I got my travelling genes from my parents. Since my brother and I left home they travel even more than before. I won’t complain, as every trip ends in a new pair of earrings for me. This pair was made in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where they passed on their trip with the Shongololo train. I can’t help but wonder what’s on the rolled up little papers…
